Wisdom Teeth

What are they?

Wisdom teeth are extra molars, or third molars, that usually show up in young people between the ages of 15 to 25. These third molars often crowd your mouth because most mouths are too small for them. For that reason, sometimes they have to be removed. Please contact us in our Seattle Dentist Eastside Bellevue Dentist office at (425) 454-2005 if you have any questions or fill out the form below.

When should you have yours removed?

Not all of them cause problems. However, if you’re wondering if you may have to have yours taken out, look over the next part of this webpage at the symptoms of problematic wisdom teeth. The symptoms that are listed may tell you that yours have erupted and surfaced, and should be removed before they become impacted. To be impacted, they have popped up and have no room in your mouth to grow. Every person may feel something a little different. Symptoms may include:

  • pain
  • infection in your mouth
  • your face may swell
  • swelling of your gumline in the back of your mouth

Most oral health specialists will suggest you remove your them right away. The earlier you remove them the more likely you are to eliminate any problems you may have. For example, sometimes an impacted tooth can destroy the second molar and you may have to have it removed as well. According to the American Academy of General Dentistry, third molar impaction is the most wide-spread medical developmental disorder.

What problems can be caused by impacted wisdom teeth?

  • You may have bacteria and plaque build up
  • A cysts may form (a fluid-filled sac)
  • You may get a tumor
  • Infection could set in
  • jaw and gum disease

What is involved in taking your molars out?

Extraction surgery involves taking the gum tissue out where the tooth is embedded, gently disconnecting the connective tissue between the tooth and the bone, taking the tooth out, and suturing the opening in your gumline.
